Term One Principals Award

At the end of each term Mrs Henderson, our school principal is going to give a very special certificate to one person from each class at Eastern Hutt School.  The certificate is for somebody who shows excellence in all that they do at school.  That means that we give our very best....always!

This week Mrs Henderson presented the 'term one' certificates for excellence at the junior school assembly. 

Congratulations to Angelina from our class!

We are so proud to have Angelina in our class.  

Angelina is a very caring and kind friend.  

She is always willing to help us out.  

Angelina always tries very hard at writing time.  

She stretches words out of her mouth like chewing gum! She concentrates on sounding out the letters and tries to write them down.  Even if she is worried she is wrong she still has a go!  

Angelina knows that good learners get 

better and better by trying hard.

Angelina is so proud of her learning activities. She can finish her work, and always checks she is following the instructions.

Angelina is a super star listener at news time. 

She sits so tidy and still, and always looks at the person talking. We know she is listening because she sometimes asks us really interesting questions!  

Your are a super star Angelina.  

We think you deserve Mrs Henderson's special award this term because no matter what we are doing in the classroom, you are trying hard to give your best...always!

Lots of us in E6 are learning to give our very best so we can be super star learners.  I wonder what you think you have given your best at this term in E6?

Movin'March 2012

This week we celebrated the Greater Wellington Regional Council's Movin'March Day.  We had to walk, cycle or scooter to school, or some of the way to school - and we got special rewards as we came through the school gates!

Lucy got a snap wristband.

Ashley got an activity book.

Navik got a badge he pinned to his shirt.

Natasha got a sticker!

The children at Eastern Hutt School decorated their shoes so they could come to school with fancy feet! We certainly had fancy feet in E6.  

I wonder who all these fancy shoes in our slideshow belong to?

We had a Fancy Feet Parade with our Buddy Class.  
We showed off our shoes to each other and then we sat in groups and told each other how and what we used to decorate our shoes, and who helped us decorate our shoes.

We thought Zoe from our buddy class had

fantastic fancy feet!

We are getting really good at talking to our buddies  and sharing information with them.  Sometimes we are shy but the more we see of them the more confident we 

are becoming!

Learning our Sight Words

We have been busy in E6 learning to read, write, and spell our sight words.  We use mini whiteboards and magnetic letters to practice forming the letters in words.

Sometimes we rainbow write words in 5 colours.
We are getting really good at instantly recognizing so many words and this is helping us to become super star readers and writers!










This week we made sight words with playdough.  

 We had to read the word, say the word, make the word and write the word.    

We love this activity - it makes learning fun.  We are very proud of how many words we can read and write.  Sometimes we still get muddled but we have such a positive attitude to learning that we are making great progress!  Well done E6!

St Patricks Day Art with A2

On Friday we caught up with our buddy class, A2.  Since it was nearly St Patricks Day, and Mr O'Sullivan is from Ireland, we decided to help him celebrate St Patricks Day.  We talked about how people in Ireland, and all around the world, celebrate St Patricks Day on March 17th each year by wearing green costumes, spending time with their families and friends, going to church and taking part in big colourful parades.    Ireland have a special day off to acknowledge St Patricks Day.

Mr O'Sullivan shared some facts with us about Ireland.  He told us he comes from Cork.  Cork is a city near the bottom of Ireland.  He told us that people in Ireland love to eat potatoes and wear green clothes a lot!  We weren't sure if he was tricking or not!  

Mr O'Sullivan asked us to put our hand up if anyone in our family comes from Ireland.  Lots of us thought our Grandparents and their Grandparents came from Ireland!  

We were very clever listeners as Mr O'Sullivan shared some stories and facts about Ireland. 

Our buddy activity was to make Shamrock People together.  Shamrocks are a 3 leaf clover and are one of the symbols that remind people of Ireland.  

 Our buddies helped us cut out the shapes.

We had to sellotape and glue the arms and legs on.

 We had to fold the paper back and forth, back and forth to make the arms and legs for our Shamrock Buddy!

 What amazing buddies we have!

They teach us, and let us have turns to practice 

all the tricky parts.

 We pasted the edge of our Shamrock with PVA glue and then we smothered it in green glitter.  

We gave them big googly eyes and a bright red happy smile.

We are going to display our St Patricks Day Smiling Shamrocks in the school library to share with everyone.  

What a great time we had with our buddies.  It is fun getting to know other teachers and children at our school!

Junior School Beach Trip

Last week the junior classes all went to Days Bay for a fun day at the beach.  It was a typical Windy Wellington kind of day - but the sun shined brightly for us.  

We were very excited about catching the bus with our friends.   

What wonderful bus manners we had! Sitting safely and sensibly,  and saying thank you to the driver.

We stopped for morning tea before we began

 exploring the beach.

We covered our legs in sand! It felt cold at first.

We spent such a long time making all sorts of sandcastles.  We made big ones and little ones! We made them with friends showing co-operation and teamwork.

We made some sandcastles on our own too.

We were very creative.  We found beach treasures to decorate our castles.  We used shells and tiny bits of driftwood.

We loved exploring the water's edge.  

We found colourful shells, smooth stones and squishy slimey seaweed.

What a fantastic day we had.  

We all went home like tired little ducks! 

Thank you so much to Riya's Dad, Dylan's Mum, Lachlan's Mum and Mrs Cooper for taking such great care of us and helping to give us an amazing day out at the beach!  We couldn't have had so much fun without your help.

Strike Performance

We were very excited yesterday because the Strike Percussion drumming group visited our school and put on an amazing performance for us.   Strike have put on shows around the world so we felt very very lucky to see them in our school hall!  

Tim, Murray and Tom played big drums, little drums, loud drums and quiet drums.  They played the drums very fast and then they played them very slow.  Murray showed us the conventional drums, the Cook Island log drums and we even saw them play some drums hanging off a big metal structure!

 We helped the Strike Performers make music.  We pretended we were in a rain forest and made rain music by clapping our hands, rubbing our hands together and clicking our fingers to the beat of the drum.

At the end of the show Tim, Tom and Murray showed us their very special trick - making music with fire!  We had to listen really carefully so that we could hear the quiet rhythm of the flames.  The Strike performers had special training to learn to do this from the talented people at Weta Workshop who are helping to make the movie 'The Hobbit'.    

Tim, Tom and Murray told us about the special magic potion they had to spray to make the magic fire music!  We talked about how we will never ever try this at home!!

Number of the Week

Our number of the week was 8

We have been learning to instantly read and recognise the number 8 and the word eight.   

We practised forming the number 8 correctly.  

We practised finding the number before 8, and the number after 8.

We put number 8 in the right place on the number line.

We went on a hunt around the classroom to find a group of 8 items.  Look what some of us found...
