Week 6 Superstars

  Here are our students of the week - Nga Akonga o te Wiki - for Week 6 of Term 3.

Paige is a super star learner because she has been busy learning to write some interesting stories.  Paige can use some interesting words in her writing that make us go WOW!  Paige uses words like exciting, and special, and she loves to write about how she feels in her stories.   

Mevan is a super star learner because he only joined us at school at the beginning of this term, and he loves to read.   He has been focusing really hard to match letters sounds to the correct letters.  And Mevan has learned to read and write lots of sight words already.  Mevan you are such a hard worker.  You really are a star!

Sight Word Practice

Today at reading time we worked with our learning buddy to explore 2 new apps that we found on the ipads.  

Sight Word Bingo was great fun.  It helped us to read lots of different words quickly, at a level that suited us.  We got to collect Bingo Bugs every time we won a Bingo!

Reading Raven was another fun one we discovered today.  We had to match alphabet letters to alphabet sounds, and practice tracing over letters correctly.   We also gave our hand-eye co-ordination a good work out!  

       

   

We think learning to read on the ipads is exciting.  

It is fun to have a buddy to share our knowledge with as well.  

Learning really is fun in E6!

Elmer the Elephant Kidpix

Mrs Stubbings came to E6 to help us learn how to use the macbook airs.  Mrs Stubbings is our school librarian and a bit of a whizz at using technology!

We read a story called Elmer's Special Day.  Elmer's Day is  when once a year all elephants dress up and decorate themselves, and parade.

Mrs Stubbings showed us how to use the paint bucket on Kid Pix.  We decorated an Elmer the Elephant by clicking on a square on our Elmer and filling it with paint from our paint bucket.  

        

        

We used bright colours to decorate our Elmer.  

We chose a fancy background. 

        

        

We had to type our name beside our Elmer.  

It was tricky learning to do a capital letter on the keyboard to put at the beginning of our name.  

We will practice this lots to get better at it!

        

You will have to look hard to see our beautiful Elmers.  Some of them are decorated so much they are 

hard to spot!

Week 5 Super Stars

Here are our students of the week - Nga Akonga o te Wiki - for Week 5 of Term 3.

Charlize is a super star learner because she has been working hard to read carefully and correctly.  Charlize knows so many sight words and she reads them instantly.  She has been working super hard to stretch out letter sounds in tricky words.  Charli can stretch letters out of her mouth like chewing gum!

Carter is a super star learner because he has been working so hard to write interesting stories with lots of detail.  Carter concentrates hard at writing time and his pencil gets a super star work out!   Carter wows us with his awesome stories about his favourite outings and activities.  He can tell us all about who was with him, where he went and what he did.

Week 4 Super Stars

We have so many Super Stars in E6 that we are a couple of weeks behind in celebrating our fantastic learners.   Here are our students of the week - Nga Akonga o te Wiki - for Week 4 of Term 3.

FIona is a super star learner because she has been learning to read smoothly.  Fiona is very clever at making her story voice sound really interesting, and she tries super hard to take a big breath and read smoothly... all the way to the end of the sentence!

Hunter is a super star learner because he is a math-magician.  Hunter is our champion counter!   Hunter can count all the way to 100! He can also skip count in 2s and in 10s.  He is a bit of a star at counting backwards as well.  Hunter can count in so many different ways that we decided he is a counting-magician!

Way to go Fiona and Hunter.

Ways to make Ten

We have been learning the different ways we can make 10.  

Please have a look at our beautiful butterflies!

  



First we coloured them in using big fat waxy crayons and dyed them with bright colours.  We had a ways to 10 lucky dip.  Mrs Graham put all the facts in a tin and we pulled one out.   

Next Mrs Graham gave us ten sticky black dots.  We had to put the dots on our butterfly's wings to show how we were making 10.  

Then had to check very carefully that what we showed on our butterfly wings matched our lucky dip number sentence.

Captain Cashtastic

This week was very busy and exciting in E6.  On Thursday E7 joined us and we had a special visitor from the ASB Bank called Captain Cashtastic who came and talk to us about keeping our money safe.   

Captain Cashtastic brought his special bag of goodies with him.  He had a superhero mask and cape.  He also had lots of money inside his bag.

 
 We found out what money in New Zealand looks like.  We know that in New Zealand we have coins, and notes.

Captain Cashtastic helped us to order the notes and the coins from smallest to biggest.

 Captain Cashtastic showed us an eftpos card.  It can hold lots and lots of money in a safe place and it is easy to use.  
   
We wondered if Lachlan would be able to hold the eftpos card. We thought if it was holding lots of money in it then it might be super heavy!  Captain Cashtastic waved his magic fingers and we said "ABRACADABRA" and then the Captain took his hand away and let Lachlan hold it all by himself! 

We laughed and laughed because we knew it really wasn't heavy, but Captain Cashtastic was so worried Lachlan would drop it that he couldn't look!

Captain Cashtastic told us all about a sneaky villain called Munchie the Money Monster who loves to munch peoples money.

The Money Monster munched one of Captain Cashtastic's ten dollar notes.  We had to help Captain Cashtastic by searching around the room for it.  We spotted it on the back of his superhero cape.

Finally we learned that we need to look after our money and save it so that it grows and grows!  Just like our bean plants that needed water to grow and grow.   We talked about things we need to spend our money on, and things that we want to 'munch' our money on.  
We decided that needs are things like water and food, and wants are things we'd just like to have, like a new shiny bike.

Captain Cashtastic left us with a message he wants us to think about.

Fun Ferns Netball Skills

This week in E6 we have been learning some Netball skills with Jo.  We have had a great time playing some games that have helped us learn to control, catch and throw a ball.  We have also learned how to move our bodies around the court with ease.   We think we can dodge and pivot just like the Silver Ferns do!

How do you control the ball?

Our Fun Ferns coach Joe taught us to keep our fingers wide open ready to catch and grip the ball.  We learned about keeping our hands soft.

What else did we learn at our Fun Ferns Netball Sessions? 

• It is important to keep our eyes watching the ball.
• We need our hands out in front of us so that we're ready to catch the ball.  
• We need to land softly with bent knees when we jump.
• We push the ball away from our chest when we throw it.
• We can make a rainbow pass by pushing the ball high up above our heads and over to our buddy.

Most of all, we learned that Netball is FUN!

Week 3 SuperStars

Here are our students of the week - Nga Akonga o te Wiki! Lachlan and Riya are our Super Star Learners for Week 3 of Term 3.

Lachlan is a super star learner because he is working so hard to learn to read lots of sight words instantly.  He is super snappy and fast at looking at them and saying them out loud.  Lachlan is also becoming a star at going back and fixing up when he makes a mistake.

Riya is a super star learner because she is a clever bee at spelling time!  Riya writes lots of words correctly, and she is a word family champion.  Riya knows that if she knows how to spell book then she can spell look and cook and took and shook!  

Way to go Riya and Lachlan.  We are super proud of your super learning!
