New Zealand Shake Out

At 926am on the 26 September lots of people all around New Zealand joined together to be part of New Zealand's largest earthquake drill.
It is important to know what to do if there is an earthquake so that we can do everything we can to keep ourselves safe.

Our school joined in with others around New Zealand and had an earthquake drill.

First you have to DROP.



Then you have to COVER.



Next you have to HOLD.



DROP. COVER. HOLD.

At school we have an emergency plan to help us safely get to a meeting place.  In E6 we have to go out our sliding door and down the path behind our classroom to the junior field.  

We sit in our class lines.  The teacher calls our names and we have to answer in a big clear voice YES!  Our teachers can then check we are all together and safe.

Magical Maths Basic Facts to 10

Today we found a new game to play that helps us learn our basic facts to 10.  We have loaded the game on to our numeracy links page so that we can practice at home too.  

We put it on our class projector so we could play it together.  We had to work the answer out as quickly as we could. 

Some of us have a goal to work out the answer in our heads.

Some of us have a goal to work out the answer on our fingers.

Some of us can do it in our head but we are working hard to say the answer instantly.  

(we have to say the answer in 4 seconds!)

A few of us showed the rest of the class how quickly we could find the answer.   The class sat on the mat and tried to beat the person on the laptop.

Music with Mrs Campbell

Every Friday for the last 5 weeks we have been learning about music with Mrs Campbell.  Last Friday we did some drumming.  We each got a bright coloured bucket to use as a drum.

First we tried out the different sounds we could make on our drum.  We patted them loudly and softly with our hands.  We put them on our heads and tapped them with our fingernails.  It sounded clicky!  We thought we looked silly and we all laughed lots together. 

Mrs Campbell patted her hands on the drum in lots of different ways and we copied her. 

 Next Mrs Campbell gave us some clave sticks and we used them as drum sticks.  We played our drums on the beat very loudly, and then we played them very softly.  We had to keep in time so it sounded good.

We got better and better at playing our colourful drums in time to the beat of the music.  We can’t wait for our next session when we will get to play the xylophones. 

We are turning in to the E6 Super Star Percussion Band!

The Ant and the Grasshoppers

This week Lucy, Hunter, Riya and Rayan have been reading a book called The Ant and the Grasshoppers.  It is a fable.  A fable is a special story that has a special message.   This book was a play. 
It was our first time reading a play.

We talked about the story lots this week.  We used the book to help us find information and answer our questions.  We also had to use our thinking and wonder why things happened.  

What was the title?  
The Ant and the Grasshoppers.

Who were the characters?
A busy Ant and three lazy Grasshoppers.

Where did the story take place?
On a summers day in the garden.

What happened in the story?
The Ant was very busy collecting lots of food for the winter.  The Grasshoppers spent all day every day singing and dancing and playing.  They were lazy and didn't collect food for the winter.  

What happened?
When the cold winter came the Ant had lots of corn to eat, but the Grasshoppers were cold and hungry because they just danced and played all day long and didn't gather any corn.

What was the special message?
We think the special message was that you should do all your work first so that you are organised and prepared, and then you can play after that.

We practiced our play everyday this week.   We tried using our interesting voice and thought about how to act just like the ant and the grasshoppers in the story.  Mrs Graham helped us make headbands to wear!  

We were so excited to perform our play to the class this morning...

 When we finished our play we took a big bow and our 

E6 buddies cheered and clapped for us!

Two Special Visitors

Today was a special day at our school.  We had a Black Out Day.  We wore black and white clothes to school because the All Blacks are playing Argentina tomorrow night at the stadium and we were showing our support.

G O    A L L   B L A C K S !

After morning tea we all went to the hall for a special school assembly.  Two of the All Blacks come to our school to visit us.  They were Aaron Cruden and Wyatt Crockett.  

We had to wait patiently for the All Blacks to arrrive.  We were trying to guess which All Blacks it could be that were coming to meet us!

The All Blacks were interviewed by some of the senior children.  They were asked some quick fire questions and the All Blacks had to answer fast and weren't allowed to pause!   They told us they loved Mcdonalds more than KFC, and cricket more than netball.   Aaron Cruden found it tricky to answer which All Black coach he liked more, Graham Henry or Steve Hanson!  All the teachers laughed.

The juniors, middles and seniors had a passing competition to see who could pass the rugby ball the most times in 30 seconds.  The juniors and middles threw 26 passes, and the seniors threw 30.  Then it was the teachers turn.  Miss LJ and Mr Gough threw 27 passes!  

Then it was the All Blacks turn.  They threw 30 passes in 30 seconds.  They threw the ball really fast and really straight!

Aaron Cruden told us he was so happy to see us all wearing black.  He thanked us for showing our support and said it will help the All Blacks to do a good job tomorrow night against Argentina.

Our E6 Dads

In E6 we  drew some portraits of our Dads for Fathers Day.  We used big fat waxy crayons and tried really hard to make our pictures of our Dad look exactly like we know they look.  




We took turns to describe what our Dads look like, and what they do.  We explained why we love our Dads.  We had to speak clearly to the class, and use some interesting describing words. 
Mrs Graham typed our description of our Dad on to some colourful paper so we can enjoy reading them.  We have displayed our Dads proudly in our classroom.

We have learned that describing words help to make our sentences more interesting.   We have learned that the fancy word for describing words is adjectives . . .

We have been busy describing book characters, our Dads, and our favourite animals.

Today Mrs Cooper was teaching in E6.  She helped us describe an E6 friend.  We had to interview our friend first to find out some information.  We sat together and took turns to talk and listen to each other carefully.

We had to describe what our friend looked like, what they like to do and what they are good at.  We asked lots of questions and did lots of thinking.
