This term at Eastern Hutt School the junior classes are taking part in 'The Great Bean Race'. We are each planting a bean seed and we are going to see which bean plant grows the biggest and the tallest! We will measure our bean plant each week. What a lot of fun we have had planting our beans. We did some amazing thinking together about what a bean might need to grow big and healthy.
Some of us had planted beans before at kindy and at home, so we have some expert bean growers amongst us! Angelina thinks our bean will need lots of water. Hunter wondered where we would get the water from. Good question Hunter! Angelina thought we could put the bean cups out in the rain, and Lucy thought we could fill up the watering can at the tap. Both great thinking ideas! Emily said we would need some soil, and Paige thought the bean would need lots of sunlight. Riya told us that we will need to love our beans and care for them, she even thought we could talk to them to help them grow! You had some clever ideas Riya!
Mrs Graham soaked the beans the night before in a tray so they could have a big drink of water and get a head start in growing. Shhhhh! Don't tell the other classes!
We scooped the soil into our cup and gently lay the bean seed on the soil. We had to use gentle fingers to pat the seed down into the cup.
Next was our favourite part...watering our bean!
Now we are waiting for our beans to grow!

There is lots to wonder about growing beans!
Our beans are growing so quickly! Lucy's Dad kindly gave us some bamboo sticks so that our beans could climb around them and stand up straight. Each week we draw our bean in our bean diary exactly as we see it. We have learned that a bean plant has roots, a stem and some huge leaves that we think look like green love hearts. We try to draw each of these things when we draw in our diary.
